Yep. This is my neighborhood now. And hours of heavy snowfall left to go.
I'm waiting for a bit more accumulation for taking the Quattro out for some hoonage. Right now we're sitting at about 1.5" on the roads and between 2-5" off the roads, depending on where the wind is pointed.
Not sure who I feel worse for- the motorcycles or the Porsche sitting half naked because the wind blew the cover half off last night.

ARE YOU READY FOR SNOWPOCALYPSE 2014 PART II, ATLANTA?
I SAID ARE YOU READY?

BUT I'M IN SOUTH CAROLINA!
I just stay at home and laugh at Atlanta!

Dude, I'm in North Carolina, we just hibernate all winter.

My my, that's quite the light dusting you've got there.
/smug northern ass

Which part? Some of you guys are getting what we're getting now and some of ya'll are gonna get creamed with a metric fuck-ton of ice.

Eh, it's supposed to top out at about 12" by tomorrow morning.
Also, I used to live in New Hampshire and Maine. I seem to be the only one enjoying the snow down here. As long as it's powder and not ice, I'm happy. Sadly, the South nearly always gets a massive amount of ice with a light dusting of snow on top. I love snow, but I hate ice. Making matters worse, the South just does not have the infrastructure for this kind of weather. Hell, Greenville is already running out of salt for their trucks. And snow tires? Not a single tire shop had any in stock- you had to order them online. So I'm making do with my all-seasons on the Audi and taking it carefully.

Yeah, it's the ice more than anything that kills ya. We're just lucky enough that up North we have the infrastructure to handle the ice - so we don't have to worry about the snow.
And as far as winter tires go - meh. I've been driving on all-seasons all my life and I've never had an issue. As long they're competent all-seasons you'll do just fine. Especially where I live, where it's flat as a pancake.

Yeeeahhh...not so much here. I'm running summer-oriented performance all-seasons, which get plenty of traction to get moving and keep driving, but slowing down and stopping are immediately slippery affairs- especially with no ABS. Especially considering we live in the mountains of South Carolina. The reason the neighborhood looks so flat? We're at the top of the foothill. It's downhill in every direction, lol.

Ouch. Yeah, you're screwed coming and going. Summer tires, slick roads AND hills.

Going isn't a problem, even up hills. It's just losing that forward momentum, haha.
"Oh boy...gotta slow down in a quarter mile. Heel-toe down a gear, pump brakes..heel-toe down, pump brakes...heel-toe down...pump brakes...pump brakes...pum- ah shit, I'm understeering! Turn the wheel, left-foot brake, throttle...counter-steer...aaaaand...made the turn. Oh look! Another one!"

you should probably revise your slowing down routine to clutch>neutral>focus on gently feathering brakes, It isn't a race, and any engine braking (if that's what you are going for) is less predictable than the brakes .
![]() 02/12/2014 at 13:08 |

I tried that earlier, but engine braking honestly has proven to be way more effective. Part of it is a lack of ABS, part of it is lackluster pedal feel (the stock boosters are getting up there in age), and also just junk tires for winter driving.
To make sure there's no misunderstanding, I'm not just downshifting and dumping the pedals. I'm still keeping the brakes lightly pressed the entire time. I'm just letting the engine assist.

The part that's gonna get creamed with a metric arseload. Don't worry, I'm going to be fine, having lived through NC's wierd ice storms at least once before. All you've gotta do is stay inside, don't have any cars outside (my boy Chris is probably worried sick about his 330 coupe...), and hope like hell that the power doesn't go out, because unlike blizzards, which can be a little fun, ice storms are just...painful.

Engine braking in low grip is more effective in an AWD car too.
As a Seattle dweller, I can totally sympathize with your "Oh NOES! A tiny bit of snow!" It's not necessarily the snow, it's the ice, and most of all it's the goddamn hills. I would happily drive my all season shod rwd 300 hp sports car in a little snow...on flat ground. But it's hills everywhere around here and so when it snows as it did the other day, my car stays parked.

Ice storms are nature's bag of dicks. Awful and serve no purpose. Hoping we get away without losing power over here in the Research Triangle area....

I know bad pedal feel. I have no abs in a jeep cherokee. Its a fun time stopping this winter. (I'm in michigan) Whatever works then.

Well, at least you're RTP. Progress sort of cares about RTP, and as for the Sharon Harris area... we've got a nuclear reactor that even Greenpeace couldn't stop.
wait... MG...
Do you happen to know (or be) a Sam Young?

No on both accounts I'm afraid...and it's snowing like a bastard up here now...

yeah, top rate was an inch in 10 minutes but it's slowing down.

Picking back up here...a weather guy on Facebook thinks the snow amount bands need to be shifted 30 miles south and east...which will hopefully push the freezing rain bands down as well.
